Alto do Moura is a neighbourhood in Caruaru municipality and situated approximately 7km from the centre of this town. Caruaru, in turn, is one of the most important municipalities in Ipojuca Valley, around 123km from Recife and has a population of around 289,086 (IBGE, 2007). Alto do Moura currently has one of the most important artisan centres in the country and gained national fame from the projection of one of its most illustrious artists, Master Vitalino. Caruaru market was the first space where the figures from Alto do Moura were sold. But since the 1980s, marketing is now done in the artists’ and artisans’ own homes, workshops or studios, so that what was once only a neighbourhood has become a tourist attraction. Although the history of the figurative art of Alto do Moura is somehow linked to Master Vitalino’s career, many other artists have contributed to renewing the repertoire and techniques used, making Alto do Moura at the same time a dynamic centre focusing on cultivating the traditions.
