The town of Divinopolis, in the western Minas Gerais mesoregion, is approximately 103km from Belo Horizonte. In 1911 it was recognized as a municipality and has a predominantly urban population of 209,921 (IBGE, 2007). With regard to the municipality’s artistic production it is worth mentioning that it only became a benchmark in the 1960s, closely relating to the production of wooden sculptures begun by Geraldo Teles Oliveira, known as GTO. Today, the local economy is based on apparel manufacturing and service industries. However, G.T.O.’s success was certainly a stimulus for the arrival of new artists in Divinopolis, beginning with his own children and grandchildren.  Some of today’s artists with outstanding work are Mario Pereira Teles and Geraldo Fernandes de Oliveira.
