Cuiabá - MT

Cuiabá is the capital and largest city in the state of Mato Grosso, with a population of 556,298 (IBGE, CNM, 2011). Known for its very warm climate, the city lies at an altitude of 176m and is located in the mid-southern part of Mato Grosso State (CNM, 2012). It should be mentioned that Cuiabá is situated in the central region of South America and surrounded by three major Brazilian ecosystems: the Amazon, Pantanal wetlands and cerrado savannah. It was founded in the 18th century, when São Paulo Bandeirantes would explore the Brazilian hinterland in search of previous minerals and Amerindians for slave labour in the fields, and found gold in one of the tributaries of Cuiabá River. Due to its “central geographical position” it kept its hegemony. In 1719 the first village was founded to become a city in 1818 and promoted to capital in 1825 (IBGE, 2011). The banks of the River Cuiabá inspired the ceramist Clinio de Moura in his trade. The artist modelled regional themes from its everyday life, such as canoes, quails, viola players and couples dancing.
