Traditionally, it is a dance around the tree that flourishes in spring and a symbol of fertility or resurrection. The maypole, popular in South Brazil, consists of movements weaving and un-weaving ribbons tied to a pole. The couples move to the sound of guitars, tambourines and accordion in tune with the verses sung by the lead singer.
